Cost of Living in Cali 2026: Colombia's Most Underrated Expat City

Cali doesn't get the press that Medellín does, but expats who land here often never leave. Low rents, incredible food, year-round warmth, and the most vibrant dance culture on earth — at a fraction of the price.

Cali is the city that Colombian expats quietly move to when they get tired of Medellín's crowds and prices. It's the third-largest city in Colombia — over 2.2 million people — and yet it remains dramatically under the radar for the international audience.

That will change. For now, the window for getting here before the Instagram hordes and the Airbnb price inflation is still open.

The Cali reality check

Let's be honest: Cali has a complicated reputation. The city had genuine security challenges in the 1980s–90s (as did all of Colombia) and carries some lingering perceptions that don't reflect the modern city. The areas where expats and tourists spend their time — particularly Granada, El Peñón, San Antonio, and Chipichape — are safe, enjoyable, and increasingly cosmopolitan.

Like any large Latin American city, situational awareness matters. But this is true of Medellín, Bogotá, and every other city on this list.

Housing costs

The rental market in Cali is genuinely affordable — even more so than Medellín.

Monthly rent (apartments)

  • Granada (expat favourite, excellent restaurants and nightlife):
  • 1-bedroom: $1,000,000 – $2,200,000 COP (~$240 – $525 USD)
  • 2-bedroom: $1,800,000 – $3,800,000 COP (~$430 – $910 USD)
  • El Peñón (leafy, residential, close to river):
  • 1-bedroom: $1,100,000 – $2,400,000 COP (~$265 – $575 USD)
  • 2-bedroom: $1,900,000 – $4,000,000 COP (~$455 – $960 USD)
  • San Antonio (bohemian hillside neighbourhood):
  • 1-bedroom: $800,000 – $1,800,000 COP (~$190 – $430 USD)
  • 2-bedroom: $1,400,000 – $2,800,000 COP (~$335 – $670 USD)
  • Ciudad Jardín / Sur (upscale south):
  • 2-bedroom: $2,500,000 – $5,500,000 COP (~$600 – $1,320 USD)
  • 3-bedroom: $4,000,000 – $8,000,000 COP (~$960 – $1,920 USD)

Utilities (monthly) - Electricity: $100,000 – $250,000 COP (warm climate, some A/C use) - Water: $40,000 – $80,000 COP - Internet (fibre): $70,000 – $150,000 COP - Building admin fee: $100,000 – $300,000 COP

Food

Cali's food culture is one of its great strengths. The city sits in the Cauca Valley — some of the richest agricultural land in Colombia — and the produce quality is exceptional. The local cuisine is Pacific-coast-influenced: chontaduro, lulo, pandebono, sancocho de gallina, and the freshest fish from the Pacific.

  • Menú del día: $12,000 – $20,000 COP
  • Good restaurant in Granada: $50,000 – $130,000 COP per person
  • Upscale Ciudad Jardín dining: $100,000 – $250,000 COP per person
  • Groceries (monthly, one person): $380,000 – $650,000 COP
  • Beer at a bar: $6,000 – $10,000 COP

Transport

Cali's MIO BRT system covers the city's main corridors but doesn't reach everywhere. Most residents use a mix of MIO and app-based ride-hail.

  • MIO bus trip: $2,900 COP
  • Uber / InDriver (typical trip): $8,000 – $25,000 COP
  • Monthly transit card: $120,000 – $190,000 COP

The salsa economy

Cali's nightlife economy is built around salsa — and it's significant. Social dance here isn't just a hobby; it's a cultural institution. Salsa schools, social dance nights, and live music venues are everywhere.

  • Salsa class (1 hour, group): $20,000 – $40,000 COP
  • Salsa class (1 hour, private): $50,000 – $100,000 COP
  • Night at a salsodromo / salsa club: $20,000 – $50,000 COP cover
  • Monthly salsa school membership: $100,000 – $200,000 COP

If you come to Cali and don't engage with the salsa culture, you're missing the point of the city.

Monthly budget summary

| Lifestyle | Monthly cost (COP) | Monthly cost (USD approx.) | |-----------|-------------------|---------------------------| | Budget digital nomad | $2,500,000 – $4,000,000 | $600 – $960 | | Comfortable expat | $3,800,000 – $7,000,000 | $910 – $1,680 | | Professional / family | $7,000,000 – $13,000,000 | $1,680 – $3,120 |

Why Cali is undervalued

Cali is 10–20% cheaper than Medellín across most cost categories, has comparable infrastructure, better weather (warm but not sweltering), extraordinary food, and the most electric cultural scene in Colombia. The only things it lacks relative to Medellín are the metro system and the established expat social infrastructure.

But that gap is narrowing. The number of foreign residents has grown steadily through the 2020s, and the city is investing heavily in infrastructure, safety, and urban development.
